Know what the invitation asks for
Re-read the advert and interview invitation. Identify the assessed elements, any presentation or exercise, the format, and the instructions on timings and notes. Ask the recruitment contact if something is unclear.
Gather a few relevant examples and practise speaking about your own actions. Interview formats vary: they can be in person, live online or pre-recorded.
Match the answer to the question
Behaviour
Use a relevant example and a clear structure. Explain your decisions and your contribution.
Strength
Reflect on what you enjoy and do well. Give a natural response with a brief example when useful.
Experience
Connect what you have done and learnt to the demands of the job.
Technical
Explain your method, assumptions, relevant knowledge and checks. Follow any professional assessment guidance.
For hypothetical questions, explain how you would approach the situation rather than forcing an unrelated past story.

Try a practice question
These questions are written for practice. They are not predictions of what a panel will ask. Say your answer aloud, then reflect on whether it answers the question and shows your own contribution.
Tell me about a time you adapted your communication to meet someone’s needs.
Question 1 of 6
Questions to ask yourself after answering
- Did I answer this question, rather than a question I hoped to be asked?
- Did I explain what I personally did and why?
- Is the outcome clear, accurate and relevant?
- Could I answer “What alternatives did you consider?” or “What did you learn?”
Get ready for the day
For your own preparation. Ticks are not saved after you leave or reload.
Our suggestion: practise with someone who can interrupt with a follow-up question. This helps you explain your thinking without memorising a script.
Use AI for preparation only
The Civil Service allows AI support for research and practice. Its guidance says not to use AI to generate answers during live or pre-recorded interviews, complete assessed tests, invent experience or answer situation-based assessment questions. Follow your assessment instructions.
